Why You Need a Triathlon-Specific Bike Saddle
When it comes to triathlons, comfort and performance are paramount. Triathletes spend long hours in the saddle during races and training, often in an aerodynamic position that places extra pressure on certain areas of the body. This makes a specialized triathlon bike saddle crucial for maintaining both comfort and efficiency throughout the event.
Unlike standard bike saddles, triathlon-specific seats are designed with the unique needs of triathletes in mind. The shape, padding, and design of a triathlon bike saddle provide improved pressure distribution, reducing discomfort and allowing for better power transfer. The aerodynamic positioning, which is key in triathlons, requires a saddle that supports long rides without causing pain or fatigue.
The reason a specific saddle is needed for triathlons is primarily due to the fact that in the aerodynamic position, the pelvis tilts forward. This shifts the weight from the ischial tuberosities (sit bones) to the ramus bones. A road bike saddle does not provide support for the ramus bones because this is not needed in a more upright riding position. However, in the aero position, supporting the ramus bones is essential for maintaining a stable riding posture, while simultaneously preventing numbness in the perineal area. RAMUS offers the solution to this.

Between the ramus bones, several sensitive anatomical structures are located. These include essential nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissues that play a crucial role in circulation, sensation, and overall comfort while riding:
- Perineum – The soft tissue area at the base of the pelvis, containing nerves, blood vessels, and muscles.
- Pudendal nerve (Nervus pudendus) – A nerve that runs through the pelvis, responsible for sensory function in the genital area and partial control of the pelvic floor muscles.
- Internal pudendal artery & vein – Blood vessels that regulate circulation in the area.
- Urethra – The tube that carries urine from the bladder; varies in length between men and women but is always sensitive to pressure and irritation.
- Genital soft tissues – Including the labia (in women) and the scrotum (in men), which are vulnerable to excessive pressure.
In the RAMUS saddle, this area is left completely open. The central cutout eliminates any pressure on these sensitive structures, ensuring that no force is applied to nerves or blood vessels. Instead, the pressure is distributed solely onto the ramus bones, providing both comfort and stability while riding. In a conventional road bike saddle, all of the sensitive structures listed above would be compressed when riding in the aero position.
RAMUS is the Right Choice
At RAMUS, we understand the importance of a saddle that enhances your performance while keeping you comfortable. Our triathlon bike saddles are engineered to support the natural positioning of your body during those long, intense training sessions and races.
What sets RAMUS apart is the ability to customize the saddle with replaceable seat pads, allowing you to fine-tune your comfort level for each ride. Whether you’re training for a triathlon or participating in a time trial, RAMUS saddles ensure that you stay in the aero position for longer periods without sacrificing comfort.
In addition, we’ve taken into account your hydration needs with integrated bottle cage mounts, making sure you have everything you need to perform at your best.
When you choose RAMUS, you’re choosing a saddle designed specifically for athletes who demand the best in both comfort and performance.
We all have slightly different pelvic structures, which is why we offer five different size options. This allows each rider to find the optimal saddle model for their unique body. The process starts with measuring your sit bones, which helps us get an accurate “map” to determine the best model for you. You can find a detailed chart below to see how each model fits different pelvic sizes.
Sit Bone Width (mm) | Recommended Model |
≤ 105 | LFE115NN |
95 – 110 | 115 or 120 |
111 – 125 | 135 |
120 – 130 | 140 |
